Two REdesign Undergraduates Selected for 2020-21 Abrams Scholar Program

Congratulations to REdesign undergraduate research assistants Caroline Dau and Bhairavy Puviindran, who have been recently selected for the 2020-21 Cohort of Abrams Scholars! The Abrams Scholars program, sponsored by the NCSU College of Engineering and the UNC/NCSU Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, provides funding for outstanding BME undergraduate researchers to work on projects proposed by faculty members. Scholars are selected from a competitive pool of applicants and are expected to present their findings at the end of the Spring semester. You may read more about the funded projects and students in the announcement from the BME website.

Way to go, Caroline and Bhairavy! We look forward to a productive year of research!

REdesign Lab 2019-2020 Abrams Scholars Finish and Present Their Research

Congratulations to the four Abrams Scholars from the REdesign Lab, who have completed their year of sponsored independent research. The Abrams Scholarship program in the UNC-CH/NCSU Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) provides stipends to top BME undergraduate student researchers to conduct independent research in BME and BME-affiliated labs. Their research culminates in May when the scholars deliver presentations to the BME department on their progress and findings. The 2019-2020 Abrams Scholars from the REdesign Lab and their presentation titles are as follows:

REdesign Undergrads Present at Spring 2020 NCSU Undergrad Research Symposium

Three REdesign Lab undergraduate researchers presented their work at the North Carolina State University (NCSU)’s 29th Annual Spring Undergraduate Research & Creativity Symposium! This spring, the symposium took place online, where undergraduate researchers across the University showcased their projects through a poster/video format.

We thank these generous programs for their funding.

Amber Receives NCSU OUR Award for Spring 2020

Congratulations to REdesign undergraduate and Abrams Scholar Amber Detwiler who was recently funded a NCSU Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) Award for Spring 2020! Amber submitted a proposal to continue her independent research project that started as a Summer Interdisciplinary Research Initiative (SIRI) collaboration between the REdesign Lab and the lab of Jorge Piedrahita (NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine). Because of her successful application, Amber will be awarded $500 in lab supplies to be used in the spring semester. We thank the NCSU OUR Office for providing this funding.

Andreea and Ariana Receive Awards at NCSU Biomaterials Day

A special congratulations goes to REdesign Lab PhD student Andreea Badileanu and undergraduate researcher Ariana Frey for receiving awards in the presentation competitions at NCSU “Biomaterials Day”! The NC State Student Chapter of the Society of Biomaterials (SFB) hosted this conference on October 25th in Hunt Library and featured student oral and poster presentations in the field of biomaterials. Andreea was awarded 2nd place in the Oral Presentation competition while Ariana was awarded 3rd place in the Poster Presentation Competition.

Congrats again to Andreea and Ariana! Keep up the great work!

Four REdesign Undergrads Selected as 2019-20 Abrams Scholars

A record-setting number of REdesign Lab undergraduate researchers were selected for this year’s Abrams Scholar Program!  Sponsored by the UNC-CH/NCSU Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, the Abrams Scholar Program admits some of the brightest and most promising BME undergraduate researchers. Awardees are selected after a competitive application process and are given a stipend throughout the school year to do research on a specified project,  culminating in a final presentation to the department in the Spring. The program is named after C. Frank Abrams Jr. who was an integral part of the formation of the BME department we now have today.

The four awardees in the REdesign Lab are Amber Detwiler, Ariana Frey, Cody Helm, and Isabel Mayo.

We all look forward to the work you will all do this school year! Congratulations!

Ariana Receives Travel Support from NCSU College of Engineering

Congrats to REdesign undergraduate researcher Ariana Frey who has received funding from the Engineering Your Experience Program at the NCSU College of Engineering! These funds are allotted to NCSU undergraduates who wish to enhance their engineering education by traveling to professional conferences, studying abroad or participating in competitions. Ariana will be using these funds to travel to and present at the 2019 Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) Annual Meeting in Philadelphia,  PA this October.

Cody Helm Awarded 3rd Place in 2019 CMI Summit Poster Competition

Congratulations to undergraduate and REdesign Lab student researcher Cody Helm, who received a 3rd place poster award at the 2019 Comparative Medicine Institute (CMI) Annual Research and Innovation Summit! Along with sixteen other CMI Summer Interdisciplinary Research Initiative (SIRI) students, Cody was judged by teams of CMI faculty and associate members on a poster presentation of his summer work. The award was presented by Dr. Paul Lunn, Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, and Dr. Warwick Arden, Provost.

REdesign Lab Members Present at 2019 CMI Summit

On August 26th, several REdesign Lab members participated in the 2019 Comparative Medicine Institute (CMI) Annual Research & Innovation Summit at Talley Student Union. The REdesign Lab had three Summer Interdisciplinary Research Initiative (SIRI) students, funded graciously by the CMI, who presented their work in the poster session during lunch. These students also presented their research at the 18th NC State University Annual Summer Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium on August 1st. The SIRI students and their projects were:

Amber Detwiler – “Feeling Out” the Niche for Hair Follicle Development in Bioengineered Skin Grafts (REdesign mentor: Lewis Gaffney)

Cody Helm (3rd place award) – Nanocarrier Optimization for Mast Cell-Targeting Drug Delivery in an Enhanced Permeability and Retention (EPR) Model (REdesign mentor: Emily Ozpinar)

Jack SchultzImproving Porcine Oviduct Epithelial Cell Culture Using Porcine Oviduct Extracellular Matrix (REdesign mentor: Camilo Mora-Navarro)

Ph.D. candidate Emily Ozpinar and undergraduate student Ariana Frey were selected to present their 2018 SIRI project and share how this project transformed over the 2018-2019 school year.

Postdoctoral fellow Dr. Camilo Mora-Navarro was invited to be a part of the Associate Member panel and discussed the influence CMI has had on their research career at NCSU.

Ariana and Cody Receive 2019-20 OUR Grants

A big congratulations goes to REdesign undergraduate students Ariana Frey and Cody Helm for receiving NCSU Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) Grants for the 2019-20 academic year. Both students were  awarded $1,000 each for supplies towards their individual research projects in the REdesign lab.
