Dr. Mora-Navarro Receives 2020 BME Department Achievement Award

The UNC/NCSU Joint Department of BME has announced their 2020 Department Achievement Awards and we are proud to announce that REdesign postdoctoral research associate Dr. Camilo Mora-Navarro has received the Postdoctoral Fellows Award for Outstanding Research Achievement!

The department had this to say about Dr. Mora-Navarro:

“Dr. Mora-Navarro (Freytes Lab) has pushed the field of manufacturing extracellular matrix scaffolds for regenerative medicine to the next level, published 4 refereed papers in 2020, filed a patent application, and excelled at training undergraduate researchers–one of whom has achieved co-authorship on a publication.”

Dr. Mora-Navarro was nominated for this award and selected by a panel of professors from both NC State and UNC. The awards were announced via email and on the BME website. He will receive a commemorative plaque along with this recognition.

We couldn’t agree more with the decision! Congrats, Dr. Mora-Navarro!

REdesign Lab Presents at TERMIS-AM

The REdesign Lab is back from the 2019 Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS)-Americas Chapter Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL! It was an event full of great scientific talks, networking opportunities, poster presentations and warm weather.

Dr. Camilo Mora-Navarro was selected to give an oral presentation in the Biobased Materials for Regenerative Medicine session. The title of his talk was “Decellularized Vocal Fold Lamina Propria-ECM and Associated Matrix-bound Vesicles: Proteomic and In Vitro Characterization Of The TGF-β1 Mediated Fibrotic Response In Human Fibroblasts”. Dr. Mora-Navarro was also selected as a Student Young Investigator Section (SYIS) Top 10 Oral Presentation at TERMIS!

The REdesign Lab had the following poster presentations (presenting author is underlined and in bold):

Andreea Badileanu In Vitro Co-culture Under Static And Vibratory Conditions To Study How Vocal Fold Lamina Propria Extracellular Matrix Hydrogel Modulates Macrophage Polarization And Fibroblast Activation

Lewis Gaffney Muscle And Tendon Derived Extracellular Matrix Promotes Expression Of MTJ Specific Integrins In Myoblast Cell Culture

Dr. Ana Gracioso MartinsA Cost-effective In Vitro Testing Platform Using Light-assisted Functional Characterization Of Engineered Heart Tissues

Emily Wrona OzpinarModulation of BMP Expression In Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Cardiomyocytes By Direct and Indirect Co-Cultures With Macrophages

Dr. Gracioso Martins, Andreea, Emily, Lewis, Dr. Freytes and Dr. Mora-Navarro at TERMIS-AM in Orlando, FL.

What a great event!

Dr. Mora-Navarro Selected for NCSU Postdoctoral Travel Award

Congratulations to REdesign postdoctoral research associate Dr. Camilo Mora-Navarro for receiving an NCSU Office of Postdoctoral Affairs travel award! This funding is awarded on a competitive basis four times a year to support travel and presentations by NCSU postdocs at domestic and international conferences. Dr. Mora-Navarro has chosen to use this funding to travel to the 2019 Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS)-Americas Chapter Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL, where he was selected to give an oral presentation.

Great job, Dr. Mora-Navarro!

YSP Proposals by Ana and Andreea Selected for Funding

Congratulations to Postdoctoral Research Associate  Dr. Ana Maria Gracioso Martins and PhD student Andreea Badileanu for having their NCSU Comparative Medicine Institute (CMI) Young Scholars Program (YSP) proposals selected for funding! Associate members of the CMI organize into interdisciplinary teams and pitch projects to CMI faculty in order to obtain funding for an undergraduate student and supplies. Ana, Andreea and their respective teams put together award-winning  projects for the 2020 cycle! Read about their projects, as well as the other funded projects, in this post on the CMI website.

Congratulations!
