Research Interests
The laboratory of Dr. Freytes is dedicated to developing and evaluating bioengineered tissues utilizing pluripotent stem cells and specific extracellular matrix scaffolds. The lab’s primary objective is to create novel strategies for tissue function restoration through the assembly and testing of bioengineered constructs. The team’s research focuses on utilizing tissue-specific extracellular matrices to guide stem cell differentiation and tissue remodeling and understanding the interaction between inflammatory cells and bioengineered tissue constructs to improve incorporation and survival. Dr. Freytes’ laboratory focuses on designing and testing bioengineered tissues mainly composed of pluripotent stem cell-derived repair cells and tissue-specific extracellular matrix scaffolds. The overall goal is to develop new strategies to assemble and test bioengineered constructs capable of restoring tissue function. The primary objectives of the laboratory are 1) to harness the power of tissue-specific extracellular matrices to guide stem cell differentiation and tissue remodeling in vitro and in vivo and 2) to understand and harness the interaction between inflammatory cells and bioengineered tissue constructs.
